47 MILES TO E FUEL LEVEL LOW came on our car as we traveled back from speaking at Pathways Community Church in Jackson, Michigan last Sunday, August 28.

We just finished sharing about our ministry as pastors and encouragers to our missionaries and there came the message FUEL LEVEL LOW.

How is your fuel level today? It is good to take a look at spiritual and emotional tanks and take note of what is in reserve and stop for a rest and a refill.  

Marlene and I spend our time in ministry day after day helping to re-fuel our missionaries and keep them running for the long haul. Cross-cultural work is never easy and pouring out to others in ministry in another language, or an unfamiliar location can certainly cause the fuel levels to run low. Traveling to another country and culture can have stressful results.

We work together with our Member Health Team at World Gospel Mission to help relieve the stressors of missionary life and work and to encourage the re-fueling of the heart and soul. The word Sabbath has become an important word to emphasize. Sabbath means, "stop,  rest, time out" and that is a word we would like to share with you today. God longs to draw close to you and to minister to your heart and soul and as a matter of fact He promises that when you draw close to Him, He will draw close to you. In that relationship God restores your soul and replenishes your tank and allows you the spiritual and emotional energy you need to continue on in deepening that relationship.

 

The statement "Work out of our rest, not rest out of our work" is something that means a lot to us. This quote is closely tied with Creation. God worked for 6 days to create everything and speak it into existence, that which never before was. The Bible tells us that the last creation was Adam and then on 7th day God rested and turned the creation over to Adam. Adam's first day, was God's 7th day, a day of REST. Sabbath rest, means to set aside time to be with the loving heavenly Father, so that re-fueling and refreshment can come and it is possible to "work out of our rest, not rest out of our work."

 

It is great for Marlene and I to remind ourselves of this truth. We can get busy in the work just like you our supporters and prayer partners. We can get busy in the work just like our missionaries, pastors and church leaders. The fuel level can get low and when the warning light comes on, take notice. Listen to your soul, draw near to the One who loves you and cares for you and know that God is with you. Re-fuel your tank in His presence and give yourself time to allow God to minister to your heart. He longs to spend time with you.

 

Next week we have the honor to work with a dozen of our missionaries coming from around the world everywhere from Kenya to Bolivia and places in between for some days of refreshment and renewal. Please pray for our Member Health Team as we pour into our missionaries and encourage them through this time of debriefing and renewal. Please pray for our Member Health Team as we transition our co-workers Frank and Sharon Martin into retirement and we continue to minister to our missionaries around the world. Please pray for our newest members of our team Greg and Teresa Leeth as they work with us and Mike Banks as he ministers to our missionary kids.

Falling into Praise!

Niagara Falls has always been a favorite place to visit. I can remember as a really young boy going to see the falls on a journey that I thought would never end, but when it did it was awesome to experience the beauty and the wonder of the falls. The long trip was soon upstaged by the roar of the waters tumbling over the rocky cliffs. The nights were enchanted by the colorful rainbows of the lights beaming rays of beauty through the thick mist. Rolling the clock forward a few years, here stands our adult sons, Joshua and Jordan pictured here taking in the beauty of a recent stop we made while traveling back from a family wedding in Massachusetts.

As I was thinking of the falls, looking at this picture, I was reminded of  the power of this water falls. From that water comes power in the form of electricity, but in the water there is power in the form of refreshment, beauty, and the awareness of God's creation. The Psalmist declares, "O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth." During this summer lets take a moment to pause and reflect on the majesty of God and praise His name together. We have much to be thankful for and much to praise Him for. I would suggest we pause even now and simply turn to Jesus and say, Thank you Jesus! You alone are worthy of our praise. Allow yourself the opportunity to fall into praise.

 

Marlene and I would like to praise the Lord with you. Not only are we thankful for family, our children, our granddaughter, our home, and all of the basic needs we have that God is so faithful to supply, but we are thankful for you. So many of you have had a significant influence in our lives, and you have made a significant contribution to our work and ministry and we are thankful for you. Many of you pray regularly for us and your prayers make a huge difference. Many of you give financially to support us in the work we do with missionaries. Your gifts have made our ministry with World Gospel Mission possible, and we are thankful for you. Many of you are part of churches that have included us in your missionary prayer focus, missionary giving and regularly remember us. We praise the Lord for all of you and thank you for your faithfulness to this ministry. Your prayers and support have been key to reminding us regularly that God has called and when He calls, He is faithful to provide all that we need. What an opportunity to fall into a time of praise.

 

During the month of June we traveled to Texas where we spent some time with some missionaries to hear their hearts and supporting them in their ministry. Debriefing and renewal are key components we bring to our missionaries that help them stay strong and continue on. We also traveled to Jackson, Michigan and spoke at Christian Fellowship Center, a faithful, loving, supporting body of believers and updated them on some of our recent travels in ministry this year. We also went to our home church, Trinity Wesleyan in Jackson, MI and participated in speaking and teaching at our Kid's Kamp with over 300 kids attending. A world famous juggler performed while sharing the Gospel and over 115 kids responded to receive Jesus as their savior during this event. The Angels in heaven were dancing - our hearts were too - and you know we fall in to praise to God for what He has done and because you were praying too.

 

The month of July has us staying close to WGM Marion as this a month of training and work with our missionaries right here. Just last night, the Sixth President of World Gospel Mission, Dr. Dan Schafer was installed into office. We are excited about the days ahead for WGM and we know that God has great things in store for reaching our world for Him. We invite you to continue to pray with us that WGM reaches it's full potential in serving Christ.

 

We ask an interest in your prayers next week July 10 - 15 as we conduct our Orientation Camp designed to prepare and send out missionaries to their fields of service. This camp we will work with missionaries going to both Uganda and Kenya. July 20 - 22 is our Renewal. We ask you to pray that we can listen well and love big as we work with 15 missionaries and 10 missionary kids during this time of debriefing and renewal. We want to hear their hearts and be an encouragement to them as they transition to home ministry assignments. Then we round off the month, July 25 - 28 with our CMS Training for new missionaries coming on board as they learn to build their support team and prayer team as they begin their work as missionaries. We end the month with speaking at Somerset Congregational Church in Somerset, Michigan on July 31.

 

These are important days. We thank God for His help and for the call we are answering together to make a difference in this world for Jesus.  Thank you Jesus!

From East to West

 This month in our Champion Corner we want to bring you up to date on our whereabouts and all the wonderful blessings and opportunities we have had in our work and ministry. On April 15 we became the proud grandparents of Rowen Elizabeth Hiser. Zac and Jessi have blessed us with a beautiful baby girl whom we are head over heals in love with. Rowen traveled over Memorial Day weekend (with the help of her parents) to Old Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts for Ned's niece's wedding. It was a wonderful time to be together as family. We enjoyed visiting our kid's pediatrician, Dr. Kaselis, who met us for brunch. She took care of Jessi as a toddler. Great Grandma McGrady is enamored with Rowen as is the rest of the family. She is such a precious gift from God. Our entire family was able to attend the wedding and it was a wonderful time of celebration for all of us. A couple of highlights were Ned was able to be with his siblings and their families for the first time in a long time and the opportunity to represent the family in part of the wedding ceremony. We certainly enjoyed that time together as family and the break from our many travels in missionary service.
As we move back from Memorial Day, we found our selves ministering to our missionaries on the American Indian Field. We were attending a Soul Shepherding Conference at Lake Arrowhead, California and spent the week in a time of spiritual formation and renewal. We often are asked how do you care for yourselves when you are so busy trying to care for so many missionaries. The answer is the same for us as it is for you, it is done very intentionally. This week of spiritual renewal was certainly an encouragement to us. One of the highlights for us was visiting the Joshua Tree National Monument.

From California we flew over to Phoenix, Arizona where World Gospel Mission has a number of missionaries serving among the Native American people groups. The  beauty of this part of the world is spectacular and something amazing to behold. From the red rock formations to the unique canyons and valleys it is certainly a masterpiece of God's grand creation. Psalm 42 says "O Lord, O Lord how majestic is your Name in all the earth." Certainly the majesty of God and the beauty of His handiwork is evident. We were able to take in many of the sights and wonders as we traveled many miles in visiting our missionaries. The main hub for WGM is the Southwest Indian Ministries Center, in Phoenix. We gathered with our team of missionaries there and shared a time of fellowship around the table as we visited with them and heard their hearts for ministry among the Native American people. We travelled through the Navajo Reservation to Farmington, New Mexico where we met with our team of missionaries serving on that reservation. Many of the pictures above would be common sights along that journey. We heard about the dream our missionaries have for a community center to be built there so that they can expand their outreach to the children in afterschool programs and VBS type ministries. God is working in tremendous ways and His works are amazing to behold.

Just a seven hour trip back through the reservation and we were back to Phoenix. One of our stops along the way was Four Corners, NM, where we stood in four States at the same time. Marlene was in Colorado and Utah and Ned was in Arizona and New Mexico.  It was then off for a three hour drive to Sells, AZ to the Tohono O'odham Reservation to visit the ministries of our missionaries working there. The highlight of this trip was to honor the service of out-going missionary, Dorothy Low. Dorothy has served the Native Americans for over 25 years and for the past 17 years, she has provided hospice care to families in need throughout the reservation. Dorothy poured her life and talents as a hospice nurse helping many with the comfort and love of Jesus during end of life situations. Ned represented WGM and read a tribute to Dorothy for her many years of faithful service and a number gathered in her honor. A traditional Native American song and dance was delivered in her honor, also and we joined in thanking Dorothy for her service.
As we look ahead we find our summer full of trainings, debriefings, renewals, and opportunities to serve God here at the Marion, IN home office. We will travel to Texas, Michigan, and Pennsylvania in times of ministry to missionaries and or speaking in churches and promoting missions. Of course "Papa and Ama" will find a time to visit Mansfield, Ohio too.

Spring On!

Marlene writes, Spring has always been my favorite season. I’m sure that has something to do with growing up in Upstate New York and the long, cold, dark winters and, maybe, because I was born in the Spring. It represents new life to me. Fresh green grass, blossoming trees, and flowers peeking their tentative heads up out of the still cool earth. It represents hope. The long winter is soon to be behind us and the hope for warmth and sunshine renews our minds and reminds us that things are changing. Many times I have found myself, as well as other missionaries’ hearts, longing for “Spring”. We may have been in a “dark” season, one that felt long and sometimes cold. Feelings of “no-one understands, no-one really cares, or, maybe I just need to quit”. We’ve probably all felt some of this at one time or another in our lives. As a counselor I, of course, become concerned if someone’s “winter” lasts too long. That’s another blog (and if you’re feeling that. Please feel free to contact me J ). I’m talking about the, “I need something new to happen in me”! That’s what I love about my God! Spring always follows Winter! It might look different every year and depending on where we live, but Spring always comes.

The flowers do bloom again and the grass turns green and the buds pop out. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 has always been a favorite of mine. It reminds us that nothing is permanent! The sun will shine again! That was never more real to me than the last 3 years and the many losses my family experienced. To lose my parents and two siblings in 22 months made for some dark days! Some days I felt like the sunshine of my soul could not possibly ever shine again. But, slowly but surely, it did. Like little blossoms, I saw glimpses of Spring in my soul. And, as I write this, we’re waiting to hear from our daughter who is getting very close to bringing a new life into the world. New life follows death. Spring follows Winter. Day follows night. And, even after the very worst of storms, the sun does shine again. Do you need a “Spring”? A fresh touch from God? He tells us in Isaiah 43:19, “Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert”! Wow, step out of Winter and into Spring. Leave the darkness and open your eyes to the light! Can’t you just feel the sun on your face as He does something new? If you have to walk away from your surroundings for a bit to find the sun, walk on! Seek Him in a time of Sabbath Rest and ask Him, then allow Him, to do a new thing! Revelation 21:5 “Behold, I make ALL things new…these words are true and faithful”! He is waiting to Renew YOU. To make you new! Leave Winter behind and get your Spring on!

We have traveled this Spring to Kenya, Africa during March 7 -21. Many of you prayed for us as we made this journey and your prayers helped us to bring some “Spring” to our great team of missio

naries serving Christ in Nairobi, Nakuru and Tenwek. We met individually with each missionary unit and had wonderful times of encouragement and prayer together. One of the highlights on March 13 was having a corporate prayer meeting and devotional time. At the conclusion of our service, the missionaries blessed Ned by celebrating his birthday there in Kenya. This makes the fourth continent that Ned has celebrated his birthday on. Who would have ever thought a kid from the Hocking Hills of SE Ohio would be serving the Lord around the world. Thank you to each and every one of you who make our ministry possible. God reminds us regularly through your faithfulness in giving and praying that He is our provider, our portion, our strong tower and He is that for you as well.

May the Lord Bless you greatly as you Spring ahead in serving Him.

Travels in Ministry

"I will love You, O lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: So shall I be saved from my enemies." Psalm 18:1-3

The start of 2016 has had us traveling to many places. Your prayers and support have been a huge part of sustaining us through these many travels. Opportunities for ministry around the world have been abundant and God has used us in this partnership to make an impact in our world for His Glory. Each step of this journey from Paraguay to Michigan from McAllen, Texas to Florida God has been our faithful helper, our source, our supply and certainly our strength. 

Soon after the holidays, we conducted a Renewal for several of our missionaries returning home from their fields of service. Jan. 17 we headed for Asuncion', Paraguay where we had a wonderful opportunity to minister to our WGM missionaries serving in central South America. God was faithful to us as we spent time with each of our missionaries, hearing their hearts for service and responding to their needs in prayerful and caring ways. We gathered at a retreat center just outside of Asuncion' with our missionaries for a time of worship and reflection in God's Word. Our friend and co-worker Spencer Hofer traveled with us and served as leader for our young people during the retreat. Spencer is one of WGM's accountants and was a great help to us in providing programing for our MK's. Each day we gathered for a time of worship and if you know the people pictured here, you would know that they are excellent musicians and singers, well maybe not us so much but certainly ALL of them. We sang our hearts out at each service and often saw other patrons of the retreat center stopping by to listen to us and join in with singing. Marlene taught on the topic of What Keeps You from Drawing Close to God and Ned shared the need for good Soul Care. Self care and Soul care are essential to serving God in cross cultural ministry. One of the highlights of our travels to Paraguay was the opportunity we had to worship at the El Renuvo Church, one of WGM's church in the greater Asuncion' area. There we heard a moving story from Pastor Daniel and Marcella Sosa and some of the trails they had faced. Preaching from Romans 8, Pastor Daniel shared how God was faithful to help his family through some very difficult situations and he shared that through everything God has

a plan and purpose for each one of our lives. Their story included the stabbing death of their 18 year old daughter, their business was robbed, as was their son's home and while he was welding the gas tank of a patron's car it blew up but his life was spared. As he shared Romans 8 it became evident that God was his rock, his fortress and his deliverer. He concluded by leading his congregation in singing "How Great Thou Art." The presence of God filled the sanctuary as it was a clear testimony of God's sustaining grace. Marlene had an opportunity to speak with Marcella following the service that morning and to minister to her. God met with us in a very special way that day and we have been able to share their story with several churches in Michigan and Florida where we have had the opportunity to speak.
Jan. 28 we kicked off the Global Outreach Convention at our home church, Trinity Wesleyan Church in Jackson, MI. We had a great time connecting with our dear friends and faithful supporters there. God is at work and blessing the outreach of Trinity not only across the street but around the world.

We had the privilege of leading our home office staff through a day of spiritual retreat and renewal during the end of January as well. World Gospel Mission has a tremendous support staff that assists in caring for the needs of our missionaries. It was fantastic to see God meeting the needs of our staff through this focused time of prayer and renewal.

February 7 we flew to McAllen, Texas where we presented a Ministry Match Seminar with for our fastest growing WGM field of missionaries. God met with us and helped us as we learned how He desires to use our temperaments and giftings to reach

that area of the world for His Glory. Missionaries were able to gain some insights on working together in ways that will help to encourage and maximize their ministries for the Kingdom of God. Taylor Christian School and Taylor Community Center are poised to see God work through them in some tremendous ways. We ask you to pray with our team of missionaries serving there as they continue to realize their full potential in service for Christ. The leadership of the field and the leadership of each of the ministries are working together to reach this unique Tex-Mex Culture. Marlene spoke to the elementary age children at Taylor Christian School and Ned spoke to the middle school/high school class. Many great times of fellowship and meeting one on one with our missionaries filled our ministry time. Pray for this great group of missionaries serving on the border and don't forget to pray for a great group of MK's serving as well.

 We arrived home in time for Valentine's Day and after battling a sinus infection we recovered to teach at our WGM Orientation Camp which is a time for our missionaries preparing to be sent out to receive pre field training. Our group was smaller this time but we helped in training a family preparing to work among our Native Americans, a single gal going to the border and a couple that will assist us in international pastoral ministry.

Today we write to you from Palm Harbor, FL. We are gathering with family tonight to share a meal and to remember that one year ago today, Marlene's mother went to heaven. We are so thankful that we have the hope that only Jesus gives, that hope that one day we shall go to be with Him and all of our loved ones that have gone on before us. This Sunday we will speak at Christian Life Church in Kissimmee, FL and then we will begin our trek home to Marion.

Of interest you may remember that our youngest son Jordan has graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University and is loving his job at a downtown Indianapolis business where he works and lives. He will be visiting our ministry and work in Cuenca Ecuador, Feb. 28 - March 8 where he will assist in some soccer camps and visiting where we lived. Please pray for him as he travels there alone. We are being called to serve our missionaries back in Kenya, Africa March 7 - 20. We ask an interest in your prayers as we go.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

 

 We have had a wonderful partnership in ministry this year and we are thankful for all of our family and friends that have stood with us through prayer and support during this year. We could not possibly do this ministry without each one of you and we take this opportunity every year to say "thank you"at Christmas time.

This year we visited several of our fields including those in Africa and Mexico. We made numerous visits to missionaries serving with WGM and worked in countless hours of counsel and pastoral related ministry. God was faithful to go before us each step of the way and you were part of that ministry.

In February of this year, Marlene lost her mother, the fourth immediate family member to pass away in the past two plus years. We are grateful for the body of Christ reaching out to us during this time. We were able to have some vacation time to Lake Michigan with our family and some time over the summer to replenish our own souls.

We are excited to announce that in April we will be grandparents for the very first time. Jessica and Zac are expecting their baby girl April 10. Needless to say, we are beyond excited about being grandparents for the first time. Joshua is working for Speedway Corp. in the Central Ohio area and lives in Lancaster, OH. Jordan will graduate form Indiana Wesleyan University on Dec. 19 and plans to work for a new company in downtown Indy following the holiday season. We are thankful for our family and grateful for God's blessings in our lives and for your love and support for each one of us.

Our family plans to celebrate the holidays at our home in Marion, IN for the first time since we moved here four years ago. We will visit Ned's family over in Ohio during the season. The first of the year, our travel plans include gearing up for a missionary retreat in Paraguay, January 16 -25 that we will be conducting with our WGM missionaries. We will host a Renewal time in January for returning missionaries and an Orientation Camp for new missionaries in February. We will be going to McAllen, TX in February to hold a seminar for ministry development with our team of missionaries serving on the Border. We are looking forward to these ministry opportunities so much and we ask an interest in your prayers. Anchored

As we sail through this life, it is encouraging to remember that we have an anchor to hold onto. With many recent events in our world, we remain focused on the fact that Christ is our anchor and to Him we can hold fast. We recently returned from a pastoral visit to our WGM Mexico team of missionaries serving Christ throughout the nation of Mexico. God was so faithful to grant us good travels, and wonderful times of ministry. Our team of missionaries lead by Bill and Lydia Allshouse met for their annual conference to plan and strategize for continued outreach and ministry to that nation.  

 We had the opportunity to visit several of our ministry sights in Saltillo, Leon', Irapuato and take in some of the sights there, as well as Guanajuato and Guadalajara where we held our conference at the YWAM training center on beautiful Lake Chapala.
The visit to Mexico was special to us as we reflected on the early days of our ministry as missionaries. God lead us to Laredo, Texas as newlyweds in 1985 where we served at the school, Christian Union Institute, and ministered throughout the border and down into the interior of Mexico for 5 years. God richly blessed our ministry during this time and we both recalled the fact that our love for missions and serving Christ cross-culturally was developed and nurtured. We knew that God planted missions in our hearts in those early years.
Now, some 30 years later, God allowed us the opportunity to return to the people of Mexico and to have the opportunity to meet some of our Mexican brothers and sisters in our WGM Churches and places of leadership and to allow us to be pastoral support to our team of missionaries serving the church there. It was a very inspiring visit for us to return to our anchor - the place that God gave us a call to serve Him in missions.
During our visit we had some great opportunities to meet with each of our missionaries and spend time hearing their hearts. We were then able to pray specifically for the needs that they are facing as they seek to share that Jesus can be the anchor for the Mexican people too.
We made our way to the YWAM training center located on a mountain side overlooking the beautiful Lake Chapala, near Guadalajara. During our time of retreat there, we shared with the missionaries the importance of Sabbath rest and that it is a worthwhile goal for all of us in ministry to strive to maintain. Ned shared a seminar on the "Spacious Places" that God has for us to enter into based on Psalm 18 and we talked about busyness as a condition of the heart not a problem with our calendar. Marlene shared a seminar encouraging the team to look at what things may be keeping them from experiencing a Sabbath Rest, such as baggage from the past or present, workload, relationships or other distractions that keep us from God. We had a wonderful time of worship on Sunday morning and Ned shared a message about being empty vessels made free by Christ's power to be filled with His presence. God met with us in precious ways as we shared together. We knew that many of you were praying for us as we made this visit and we thank you from our hearts.

As we approach the Thanksgiving Season, we are thankful for you. You help to keep us anchored in the ministry that God has called us to with WGM. Your prayers and your financial gifts are certainly a blessing to our ministry and make what we do possible. We ask an interest in your prayers as we leave again Thursday for a weekend conference in Angola, IN for Mental Health in Missions and then fly directly from Ft. Wayne, to McAllen, Texas where we will make a visit to our Border Team of missionaries and join them for their annual conference. Please pray for us as we share with our WGM team serving Christ there. We want to encourage them to remain anchored!

Finally we want to wish you and your family a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. May you feel  God's close presence anchoring you through any of the storms of life you may be facing. You are loved and appreciated.
