El Salvador/Honduras - Changing lives, making disciples

El Salvador/Honduras - Changing lives, making disciples

We had the privilege of witnessing some of the advances taking place in God's Kingdom during the past few weeks in two of the nations in Central America while serving as Pastors to Missionaries and supporting the care and encouragement of our World Gospel Mission missionaries.

It was our joy and privilege to see first hand that many individuals have seen the Gospel of Jesus Christ transform their lives by faith, having experienced the Kingdom changing the culture and providing for some very practical needs of people within their communities.

Our missionary visit began in Juacapa, El Salvador at the clinic we partner with for community transformation. A church has also been started in that city, reaching that area for Christ. Field leaders David and Debbie Hawk have worked the past 8 years in partnersip with the King foundation to establish this clinic to treat the medical needs of the people of this area.

Next we traveled to Choluteca, Honduras, where we found our WGM Missionaries, Larry and Angie Overholt and Tim and Aleyda Spetnegal working in transformational ministries to make a difference in people's lives in the name of the Christ. One of those ways is through Aquaphonix.

Aquaphonix is providing food through raising fish in a tank, pumping the water into a vegetable garden that is growing in gravel. The water filters back through the rocks into the fish tank, feeding a family with fish and fresh vegetables....community transformation - lives being changed by missionaries that carry the love of Jesus in unique ways! WGM Missionaries - changing lives !

WGM also supports a vocational school in Choluteca, Honduras. Here we found practical tools being taught to young men and women, changing lives emotionally, socially, physically, all in the name of Christ as the Gospel is presented a community is transformed.

Photo: We drove from El Salvador to Choluteca, Honduras where we visited the vocational school. Notice the partnership with The Ohio State University. Practical tools being taught to young men and women, changing lives emotionally, socially, physically, etc. Community transformation is happening and it is so exciting to experience with our WGM Missionaries working in that area, Tim and Aleyda Spetnegal and Larry and Angie Overholt...

We traveled on to Talanga, Honduras where we visited El Manuelito, a project that is taking kids from the streets and addressing their physical, emotional and spiritual needs through education and life transformation....WGM missionaries ,Justin and Ashley Guest, are serving God in this unique community transformation project.
Our next stop was to Catacamas,  Honduras, the home of WGM's El Sembrador Farm School. Young people's lives changed in Honduras! WGM's missionaries David and Debbie Hawk and Carrie and Joe Schmidt are currently serving there in transforming lives for God's glory! Community transformation for 59 years and going strong! To God be the Glory!

One of the more moving experiences we had on this visit was the ministry we found at "AFE" (Amor, Love, Fe,Faith, Esparanza, Hope) where children are cared for during the day as their parents are eeking a living out of the dump in the capital city of Tegucigulpa. Food, childcare, education and life transformation are given in ministry and outreach to these children. A school provides them an education, and the whole person is being ministered to...community transformation happening in a working relationship with Pastor Joeny and WGM! Heart moving ministry!

We spent some time at the WGM Headquarters in Tegucigulpa where we learned of the many ministries happening there in Bible Clubs with the children of gang members, church development, discipleship and training as well as educational ministries through teaching. Our WGM Missionaries Dee Ann Rich, Minda Kleman and team are serving.

Just before our next stop, we visited La Esperanza, Honduras, up in the mountains where two two men were recently saved through the drug alcohol rehab program that missionaries Ed and Lynda Sloan are working in.

We then boarded the ferry out to the island of Roatan where we worshipped at the WGM church in the town of Punta Gorda on the island. We witnessed God at work among the Grifa people group as this church is growing and reaching out to this community. A community center is in place there that is reaching out to the needs of the young poeple of this community and is working to teach, counsel and encourage them in the faith through the dedicated work of missionaries Karen Rickel, Lori Potter and Jared and Chris Moyer.

We concluded our second week of ministry with a retreat with our entire team of WGM missionaries. We spent time together in fellowship, prayer and study. God's presence brought encouragment and hope to our hearts.

RENEWAL - PASTORAL WORK

Our recent ministry at World Gospel Mission, Marion, Indiana Campus has been an exciting time of seeing God at work in great ways in the lives of our missionaries. Three times a year we offer a time of RENEWAL for our missionaries that are returning for home ministry here in the USA.

We had 23 missionary adults and children that we lead through a time of spiritual encouragement, celebration, debriefing and personal renewal. God met with us in wonderful ways, as lives were encouraged and hearts were spoken to by God's faithfulness to us.

We heard celebrations of what God has done to transform the lives of His people from Uganda, Africa to Bolivia, South America and many countries in between. God is at work in His World to bring men and women and boys and girls into a personal relationship with the living Lord, Jesus. It is an absolute joy to enter into the lives of these missionaries and their precious families to help them transition and prepare for the next steps in their journey of service. Marlene and I are so thankful to God for this ministry. As a matter of fact, we believe we have the greatest job ever! It is a joy to serve and we take this moment to say "thank you" to you our champions - that pray - that give - that stand with us month by month in this work.

We ask an interest in your prayers for our travels July 28 - August 10. Jordan, Marlene and I will be  traveling with Rev. and Mrs. Dale Dorothy and Rev. and Mrs. Greg Leeth to El Salvador and Honduras. We will meet our missionaries in San Salvador and travel to Jucuapa to visit the clinic and work of WGM in that part of the world. After our visit there, we will travel by van to Choluteca, Honduras where we will be visiting the houses that have been built for people as well as the vocational school that partners with Ohio State University as well as the churches in that area. Our next stop will be the capital city of Tecucigalpa. We have been told that it is the number one city in the world for per capita violence. There is a great need for the work of the church to expand and the love of Christ to be shared. In that area we will visit the ministry sight in Talanga and visit the El Manuelito Project.

El Manuelito is a ministry to the families and children that live and make their living from the dump. WGM has a ministry of child care and education/nutrition for the children living at the dump while their parents are "working" in the dump. From there we will travel to Catacamas to visit the flagship ministry of WGM Honduras, "El Sembrador" - The farm school, training young men in agriculture and education as well as teaching them about Jesus and the message of hope the Gospel message brings. We then go on to visit several other WGM ministries including La Esperanza, El Progreso, La Ceiba, the island of Roatan and on to Punta Gorda were we will visit with and minister to missionaries all along the way.

We also have recognized as God sends us on these journeys, He always has given us opportunities to minister to people all along the way, sharing the Gospel and coming alongside of missionaries to serve beside them in ministry. We ask that you will pray for us to have eyes to see what God may have us to do in ministry and outreach to the people of El Salvador and Honduras.

We then will land on the coast at Telamar, Honduras to lead a 5 day retreat with the WGM Honduras Missionary Team August 5 - 9. We are praying that God will give to us the seminars, messages and ministry that He needs our missionaries to have. We acknowledge that we need God's help as we plan and prepare and we know that the Holy Spirit must meet with us to make the difference. WILL YOU PRAY FOR US as we go on this trip? Yes, we need safety for sure, yes we need traveling mercies, and yes we need your support, but now more than ever we need God's anointing on our ministry and for those prayers we are grateful.

We look forward to updating you after our Honduras trip and will be planning to share our fall schedule of events in our coming blog next month. From our home to yours, we say, "God Bless You and thank you for standing with us!"

Look Who's in the Boat!

"Look WHO is in the boat," became the unoffical theme of our recent retreat with the Texas Mexico Border and Mexico Missionaries serving with WGM. Marlene and I had a wonderful opportunity to visit there this past month and God blessed our time there in some amazing ways. It is absolutely wonderful to be in the center of God's work and what He wants to do in the lives and hearts of missionaries faithfully serving His cause around the world. We really do have the greatest job in the whole world! Encouraging missionaries and seeing the Gospel spread through a ministry of encouragement.
We saw God was in the boat in the middle of dry, hot Laredo, Texas. We saw the fruits of our labors from our time of service there as missionaries 25 plus years ago. As we met with former students of Chrisitan Union Institute we heard testimonies of how God has been faithful to walk with them through the ups and downs of life to carry them through as they learned how to place their faith and trust in His care.  Former students and teachers gathered in front of our school chapel for a time of reunion. What a blessing to see God's faithfulness displayed. He showed up in Laredo!
We visited the radio station of KBNL where one of our former students, Rosie Rabel, is serving Christ full time as a missionary. We heard  testimony of Christ's faithfulness in lives .What a tremendous time of blessings.
We headed on down the border with stops at ministry spots along the way in San Ygnacio, and Zapata, Texas where we often visited and pastored. We had a few days to visit Taylor Christian School and Taylor Community Center in McAllen, Texas. During our time there, we learned of the tremendous ministry that is taking place to change the lives of students through education and spiritual impact as well as outreach through soccer sports ministry and community outreach.
The remainder of our time was spent at South Padre Island where we met for several days of retreat and renewal for our missionaries. There was time for prayer, reflection, instruction and listening to the voice of God speak. Worship times where rich with God's presence and prayer times were enjoyed as we saw that through it all, Jesus can be found right in the boat with us. In the midst of every storm, there is the promise of His presence with us!
During one of our family devotional times, Marlene was leading the group and provided an object lesson for the missionary kids. She had them write on a coffee filter with a yellow highlighter all of the sins they could think of. When their list was complete they brought them to the table and we sprinkled lemon juice on them and the sins disappeared! During that devotional to teach the kids of the blood of Jesus which cleanses us from all sin, little 2 year old Edson exclaimed, "It's Clean!" Wow! God showed up through a little one. The next day the object lesson was using a nail to pick up a paper clip, impossible unless you use a magnet (power source). That day, Edson exlaimed, "It's Him!" Wow, God showed His truth to the hearts of the littlest ones there. And to the hearts of all us big people God reminded us, as always,
we can trust Him. He is in the boat with us!

Please pray for our ministry during this summer as we are involved in several retreats and ministry opportunities with missionaries at our WGM Marion Office. We will have contact with many missionaries in various conference and retreat settings during this summer. We ask an interest in your prayers for our next trip to Honduras, July 29 - August 10. We will be visiting the field and continuing to meet our WGM Missionary Family. We also have the privilege of being the speakers at the retreat.

Thank  you for your prayers and ministry partnership with us. God is at work and your prayers and support make all we do possible. We appreciate you from our hearts.

Sincerely,
Ned and Marlene McGrady

Many Hands Reaching Out

This month we were thinking about how vast God's outreach to our world really is. He is busy caring for persons around the world in real and tangible ways through missionaries that are serving Christ in cross-cultural settings. Together our interest in missions allows us the wonderful opportunity to see everyday that God is working and His love is changing lives and making a difference for good.

As part of our team your prayers and support enable us to be His hands to those that are in need of encouragement and support. This month we lead a prayer chapel at World Gospel Mission here in Marion, IN and we stood around the large globe in the atrium as we prayed for people around the world. Prayer requests came in from Honduras to Hungary and from Kentucky to Kenya as the WGM staff gathered for a dedicated time of prayer for these special requests. Not only do we have the privilege to join together in prayer, but because of your faithful giving to our ministry with WGM we are enabled to actually go to these countries and minister and encourage missionaries as they are Jesus' Hands around the world.

Thank you for the many responses and interest we received from you as you received our Prayer and Praise Update last month on this blog. God is at work and we want you to know that you are a part of making a big difference in the world for Christ! Yes you are His hands too!

This month we are planning to return to the Texas-Mexican Border where we began our missionary ministry in 1985. We will arrive in Laredo, Texas on May 28 and will be meeting our WGM missionaries John and Pricilla Kunkle and seeing the work that continues there through church ministries. We are planning a time to re-unite with some of the students that we had at Christian Union Institute while we served there until 1989. Rev. Greg and Teresa Leeth, former field directors at Laredo,  will be visiting during that time as well and we look forward to the ministry God has for us as we discover what God is doing there now. We will then head to Taylor Christian School in McAllen, Texas where a number of our WGM missionaries are very involved in education and outreach through this K - 12 Christian School and the ministry of the community center. We look forward to spending time with our missionaries there and learning first hand their ministries so that we can best support them and pray for them. From there we will head to South Padre Island where the entire WGM Mexico and WGM Texas-Mexico Border missionaries will gather for their annual retreat. Marlene and I will have the pleasure of being the retreat speakers and will be sharing God's Word with our team.  We are thrilled to be His hands to our great team of missionaries serving in that part of the world.

So His hands are many and includes you, me and all that are serving Christ around our world. Thank you for so much for joining your hands with our hands so that together.....we can make the difference! Please keep us in your prayers!

Unceasing Prayer - A prayer and praise update

"When the Spirit has come to reside in someone, that person can not stop praying; for the Spirit prays without ceasing in him. No matter if he is asleep or awake, prayer is going on in his heart all the time. He may be eating or drinking, he may be resting or working-the incesnse of prayer will ascend spontaneously from his heart. The slightest stirring of his heart is like a voice which sings in silence and in secret to the Invisible."          - Issac the Syrian

"Pray without ceasing" I Thess. 5:17

"Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer" Rom. 12:12

"Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication." Eph. 6:18

"Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving." Col. 4:2

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Phil. 4:6

The longer that we are serving the Lord in the work of missions and the ministry of touching lives with the Gospel of Christ, the more our hearts are drawn to the need for prayer. We know that many of you have been praying for our ministry and missionary work and we realize that God's hand of blessing that guided us and been so faithful to provide has been a direct result of the prayers of you our Champions. We thank you for your faithfulness in prayer.

This month we are focuing on unceasing prayer - that is prayer that we live - breath. God in His faithfulness receives our prayers whether we whisper them while we drive to work, or do the dishes, or plant the garden. God is eager always to speak PEACE in the midst of any CHAOS. He is faithful to meet us at the very point of our greatest need. To God be the Glory.

We want to share these request with you as you continue to pray for the work of missions:

  • Praise for the El Faro (The Lighthouse) Wesleyan Church in Cuenca Ecuador celebrated its 4 year anniversary April 14, with 106 in attendance - This is the church that was started in our Carport when we served there.
  • Praise for the WGM Missionaries serving God around the world and that they will be given wisdom and understanding to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus in culturally relevant ways that will make them effective witnesses for Christ as "salt and light."
  • Praise the Lord for our newest champion Lakeview Wesleyan Church, Marion, IN that has included us in their regular monthly Faith Promise support.
  • Pray for WGM/Habitat for Missionaries during the month of April and May as we will be partnering with Habitat for Missionaries to "flip" a home here in Marion, IN to provide needed funds for future travel. Volunteers connected with WGM will be partnering with us in this effort. (contact us if interested)
  • Pray for the Texas - Mexico Retreat as we prepare for ministry with our WGM Missionaries in May/June. We will encouraging and ministering to our missionaries serving there. Pray that we will be God's voice to speak His message being His hands and feet. We plan to visit Laredo, TX where we served as missionaries in the 80's.
  • Pray for upcoming Field Directors Retreat in June as leaders from all of the WGM mission fields will be coming to WGM Headquarters for 2 weeks of planning, praying and renewal. We will be very involved in working with our field leadership during this time. Pray for wisdom to see and ears to hear the heart of our leaders that we may better serve them on the front lines.
  • Pray for our upcoming re-entry in July, a time of Rest and Renewal for the missionaries coming home on home ministry assignment.
  • Pray for the upcoming retreat in Honduras as we will be traveling there  July/August. We will be again sharing our ministry of care and reaching out to these servants on the front lines.
Marlene and I would ask for your prayers during the months of Sept - Dec. when we will be shifting our focus on completing our necessary funding.  We will be available to speak to churches, small groups, SS classes, home meetings to share the vision for Pastors to Missionaries and ask for financial support. We are currently at 80% of our needed ministry support level, but we need to be fully funded to ease the financial burden and released to do this work. We would love to visit with you and share our hearts for this ministry. Please contact us for scheduling meetings or visit our support page at https://www.wgm.org/mcgrady

Finally, how can we pray for you? We know that you too may have some special requests and we would love to hear from you at ned@straightpaths.org so that we may pray for you.

Blessings,

God's Word Changes Lives!

Dear Faithful Friends and Supporters,

I was drawn to the book of Hebrews 4:12 where it says, "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." And then over in the book of Isaiah 55:11 we read "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

Those two verses of scripture are such an encouragement to us and we hope to each of you this month. God is at work and His word is changing lives. Perhaps you recall last September we visited Santa Cruz, Bolivia for a missionary retreat with our WGM Missionaries. One of the days I was privileged to go out on the streets with our mission director, Rick Lampen who is a nurse practioner and is involved in a ministry to streets kids. These kids live on the streets, sleep under bridges, culverts or any place they can find shelter and in the day time they come out and wash car windows as the cars stop at street lights. They eek out a living each day and face many challenges as they battle drugs, alcohol and the complexities of street life. Missionaries like Rick, work with these kids to treat their emergent medical needs, pray and counsel with them to get them off the streets, and introduce them to faith in Christ.

I was deeply moved by a young man named Luis that I met on the streets that day. I know some of you have prayed for him and I have some real answers to prayer to share with you. (If you scroll back on this blog you can read about Luis.)

Luis is 22 years old. Over a year ago, he was struck by a car while washing windows, crushing his left arm and left leg. He went to the social hospital and had surgery to repair broken bones, but it left him on a crutch with pins in his knee and severly crippled arm and leg.

That day, Rick attended to his wounds while another missionary prayed with him. I gave him a spanish New Testament and tract to help introduce him to Jesus. He was interested in what we had to say and appreciated the help he was receiving.

During the month of February Marlene and I returned to Santa Cruz to make another pastoral visit and minister there. I had really wanted to find Luis again and follow up with him to see how he was doing. We were unable to make any connection during that visit but Rick said he would continue to look for him. Meanwhile many people continued to pray for him. Just the other day Rick ran into Luis on the street and he could not believe the change he saw in him. He asked Luis if he remembered Ned and he said he did. He also said to specifically thank me for the Bible that I gave him and he said that he read part of it, and then gave it to a friend that was discouraged since it had encouraged his heart. God's Word is powerful and it began to change Luis's heart and life. We know that God is really working on his heart and changing him, so please keep praying for him.

Here are some excerpts from an email I received from Rick. It will bless your heart as you read of God's faithfullness in answer to prayer.

There were two MD's who approached Luis last year and wanted to help him with a free surgery.  At that time, he was hooked on crack cocaine and a life of begging as he walked with his crutch from car to car.  He and I (Rick) went out for a lunch and I was able to have a good talk with him.  He wanted to do the surgery but was scared. He had my cell phone number and was to call me before going in, but his wallet was stolen and lost my number.  I had been looking for him since November but never saw him on the streets any longer so I assumed he left the city and lived someplace else.  Anyway—yesterday the team went out and when we stopped by the corner where he always worked, I saw a young man walking towards me that I didn’t recognize.  It was Luis!  He had gone through with the surgery and was walking to see us without crutches!  He looked amazing!  He’s put on some weight and looked so good!  He walks with a limp and has a brace on his hand, but is regaining strength and is in PT.  He recognizes that all of this is from the Lord and gives thanks to Him!  He wants to thank everyone who has been praying for him and is so encouraged to live and make something of his life now.  He has a smile on his face and still cleans care windows during the mornings to pay for PT but has moved back home with his mom so he’s not sleeping on the streets at night.  We were able to pray with him and thank the Lord for Luis’s life and all that He has done!  Luis has my number and he may go to church with Lori and me Sunday night and he and I will be going out for a lunch sometimes soon.  He says he feels the Lord has something special for him.  That was encouraging and for His to give God the glory for the change in his life is awesome!  Thanks for praying for him!  It’s not the end of the story with him---keep praying with us that the there would now be heart changes as we continue ministering with Luis! Below is a picture of Rick and Luis.

Thank you so much for standing with us in this vital ministry to missionaries. It is a joy for us to serve as pastors to people that are changing this world for Christ.

Sincerely,
Ned and Marlene McGrady

Pastors to Missionaries in Full Swing

During the month of January and February we have traveled 1,000's of miles to visit and work with WGM Missionaries. God has graciously blessed us with wonderful opportunities to pray with counsel these wonderful missionaries as they continue to lift high the name of Jesus. Our team of missionaries in Paraguay were a wonderful blessing to us and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We spent four days in  a Sabbath Retreat together as we studied God's word, prayed and shared our hearts with one another. The field directors Larry and Sharon Carr lead this tremendous team of servants and they are seeing the message of hope in Christ changing lives in Paraguay. There are currently 9 churches in that country and Andy and Lizeth Bowen offer language school training for missionaries desiring to learn the heart language of Paraguay which is Guarani'. Guarani' is a mixture of Spanish and the indigenous language of the Paraguayan people. Andy is a gifted linguist and an excellent language teacher. We also spent time with Mark and Bev Donahue who serve in the Asuncion Christian Academy and church ministry. We enjoyed a tour of the city with them and hanging out with them and renewing our friendships from Circleville Bible College (OCU) days. Our time there allowed us to connect with Weadette Burge and Beverly Lewis learning about their important ministries in the church and training of pastors for ministry. Great times of fellowship and connecting together was an encouragement to our souls.
A highlight for Ned was preaching at the WGM's Nueva Jeruselen Church. It had been nearly three years since he had preached in Spanish and many of you on our prayer team were praying for him. The Lord was faithful to bless and help him preach in Spanish and we thank the Lord that His Word goes forth never to return void. Continue to pray for this church as they need a pastor to lead this church forward. The seminary there has been preparing pastors as they have celebrated there 25th year of ministry. Ask God to provide for this struggling congregation.

After 10 days was up in Paraguay we boarded the plane and headed for Santa Cruz, Bolivia. We arrived there to begin our week of ministry. It was our second visit there and we find relationships deepening and growing with each visit. It becomes evident to us that the greatest gift that one can give to someone is the gift of listening. We enjoyed many visits with the team there and had great times of fellowship as we shared together. The highlight of our time there included an evening with the MK's,(Missionary Kids). We enjoyed a pizza party, ice cream and had great time of devotions and prayer. The highlight of the night was when we were able to Skype in with Jordan. Jordan went with us to the retreat last summer in July when we visited Bolivia. The kids were so excited about talking to him and he was able to share some of his experiences of transitioning back to the USA from living in Ecuador.

The next day we had an all day retreat with the missionaries there. We focused on teachings of encouragement and celebration of the victories that God has been doing on the field. Our theme included some teaching on transition and vision casting. At WGM we talk a lot about a "cause" and the team concluded that they are understanding God's "cause" for them in new and greater ways. It was so exciting to share that day together as we committed our ministries to His service. Hearts were encouraged and lives we challenged as we met together.

No visit is complete with out a time of enjoying a meal together and that is what we did as 29 of us gathered at a favorite restaurant in Santa Cruz. Rick and Lori Lampen provide leadership to this great group of missionaries. They are involved in many ministries including education, medical, a baby center, church ministries and much more. It was particularly special to visit with fellow alumni from Circleville Bible College (OCU) Mike and Donna Brown. It is so amazing to now be pastors to several of our classmates from college days. God has blessed us abundantly. He is good! All the time!

On a more solemn note, one of our classmates serving on the WGM Honduras field suddenly was called out of active duty and promoted to his heavenly reward. Kent and Rhonda Harmless served with us on the Texas Mexican Border during the 1980's when we were missionaries there. Kent and Ned were very close as Ned directed the field and Kent was his chief maintenance man. Kent went home to be with Jesus during our time in Bolivia. We returned to the USA and was able to attend a wonderful memorial service in Circleville, OH to honor his life of service to Jesus. He was a tremendous missionary and impact so many lives for Christ. WGM lost a wonderful missionary and heaven has made a gain. We ask an interest in your prayers for Rhonda as she survives and continues in ministry. Their daughter Theresa and granddaughter Sydney need our prayers as well.

This past week we participated in Orientation Camp back at WGM headquarters in Marion, IN. We provided training for missionaries headed to Spain, the American Indian Field and Kenya. It is a wonderful opportunity to invest in the training and preparation of our newest missionary disciples being sent out to serve Christ in the harvest field. At this writing Ned asks an interest in your prayers as he will be ministering on the American Indian Field in AZ. Marlene will be continuing her work and ministry here in Marion, IN.

Please pray for strength to minister. Wisdom to counsel, ears to listen and a heart to understand. Your faithfulness in giving and your prayers enable us to do this. You are our champions and with thank you for all you do.

May the Lord Bless you greatly.
Ned and Marlene McGrady
